The chief reason why people become racist is because people have sin. Sin means human is not perfect, and they innately are really arrogant. They usually do not care about the people who don't look like you and they tend to blame something going wrong in their community to the other group (esp. minority group).
Racism is not the only issue in U.S. or neither in Europe but it is the issue in any country, so we need to fight against racism but also we need to keep in mind that racism is inherent in anyone.
The reason why you think you are free from racism or racist intention is you had chance to know the people of the group you belong to. If you know people, you understand those people who are different from you are not evil.
Often this racist intention is mixed with the political stuff, such as 'their government is bad and trying to harm us, so the people belong to the nationality is also bad'. This is not correct.
As Japanese, I heard several times people in U.S. blames Japan for being xenophobic, but it turned out that they are xenophobic attacking asians on the street.
21st century is really hard century to live and we need to overcome this hate.
COVID-19 occurred, and it is really nasty and arrogant saying 'hey, we first found this virus but this is not our fault, we saved the other country' bullshit.
But at the same time, we need to look at things from different angle:
we always justify ourselves and never apologize, and this is sort of international dynamics, and Japanese government really became loser because our culture is something like 'anyway apologize it' mindset. If you admit you are wrong, you are exploited. Since all the (as i grasp) government guy know this so they never apologize.
Anyway, government is bullshit.
In totalitarian country, government decides and controls everything and its people cannot do nothing about it.
In democratic country, government uses facebook or any propaganda to brainwash people to hate the other country.
Same. Government sucks.
And they uses any sort of propaganda, as Trump used twitter, and created the public mood that 'hey, these asians are the cause of our issue!'
No, maybe the asians who physically brought the COVID is a few, and the other billions of Asians in U.S. are not related to this mess at all, it is simple mathematics and if you are not uneducated you can tell this.
Racism and racist attacks are the result of ignorance and lack of education, and it is to be ashamed.
We need to fight for our freedom, and we never should hate each other.
